Politics Aren’t Hard for Believers… That Really Believe!
August 17, 2008 12:03 pm Christian Life IssuesWhat do I mean by REALLY believe? Well, a TRUE Believer believes that God’s Word is true… factual and without error. They believe that God’s Word, the Bible, is a true revelation of God’s Mind and Will.
2Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2Timothy 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
It is not subject to personal, or private, “interpretation.”
2Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation.
2Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
What does all this have to do with politics? Simple, as a Christian, go get the party platform of the two parties in politics today… read them, and compare them carefully to the Bible. Which party’s stand is closer to God’s way of thinking? Then that one is the one worthy of support!

Dr. Bill,
I have been listening to your podcast for quite a while now and I appreciate what you are doing and teaching.
I was just listening to Netcast 111 that made reference to this article on politics. I have been struggling with my decision during this current election cycle and I was hoping for some additional advice but I must say that I still have some questions. You and my pastor and seemingly everyone in the evangelical world seem to think that voting Republican is the only way for Christian people to think about the election. Lest you think I am just trying to bait you into some silly internet argument, I am a registered Republican. I read you article about the platforms of the two parties and I find it persuasive. This is really how I’ve always voted. My concern is that we do not really vote just for the party but also for the man. I do not know either candidate personally and so I cannot say beyond a doubt whether one candidate is telling the truth or not so I try to judge the men by their words. We have one candidate who claims to be a Christian, who is the husband of one wife but who stands be hind a platform with many objectional planks. We have another candidate who has NEVER claimed to be a Christian and who had an affair with another woman while his wife was recuperating from an automobile accident then divorced her but who stands behind the platform that includes many issues that are important to us.
It is hard for me to understand how anyone can say there is an obvious choice for Christian people to make.
One last thing, I am very disturbed by the extremely un-Christian-like behavior of so many of my fellow Republicans during this election cycle. I am not so naïve as to think that there are not lies and distortions coming from both sides but I am a little taken back by the amount of unsubstantiated rumors and gossip that I have received and email forward from other members of my church mailing list. We disagreed with President Clinton. We disagreed with Senators Mondale, Dukakis, and Gore but there is something really nasty that seems to be at work here. I won’t come out and say it but it’s not hard to see why peoples of different ethnicities generally do not mix much in church.
Anyway, that last paragraph was a little off topic but I would love to hear a response from you to my first point.

While I applaud your stand on each man in terms of their marriage status and fidelity, what I was trying to point out in my article is that we should vote on positions of the candidates and their parties on Godly issues. One candidate, that claims strongly that he is a Christian, has also indicated (and so has his party platform) that he will stand against every Godly position that we could list: wrong on abortion, wrong on “Gay Marriage,” wrong on defense of the traditional family. The other candidate, while not taking as strong a personal stand on his individual position in God, has promised to protect the unborn, and is pro-family. The general perception is that people will be “voting their pocketbooks” in this election, and let the moral issues fall as they will. I encourage you to read this link:

It is from Focus on the Family, and depicts an America that I do not, personally, want to see come to pass… but, if the candidate in question does what he said he would do, it could very easily happen.

Then, when you go into the voting booth, and are about to vote, quietly pray along these lines:
“Lord, I am now voting for this individual because I believe, based on what I know about their stands on the issues that they will best represent a Godly perspective on each and every issue important to You. I vote according to Your Will, not my personal financial position, for YOU meet MY needs, not some person or party, and I stand for You and Your Word!”
